India issues 11 crore farmer IDs ahead of 2027 target

India’s central government has issued 11 crore unique farmer IDs under its AgriStack digital agriculture programme.

The 11-digit IDs, called Kisan Pehchaan Patra, were completed five months ahead of the March 2027 target.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the system is intended to give farmers a single digital identity.

The government says it can help farmers access schemes, loans, crop insurance and disaster relief with less paperwork and fewer repeat checks.

The registry includes farmers across India, including women, small and marginal farmers, tenants, sharecroppers and some forest rights holders.

The ministry says more than 6 crore farmers have received benefits since the initiative began in 2024.

The government expects the IDs to make agricultural services more transparent and easier to access.
