Japan to fund $21 billion plan for two New York chip plants
A $21 billion plan will fund two new chip plants in Malta, New York.
US President Donald Trump said Japan would provide the investment capital, while GlobalFoundries said it was selected to supply the technology and operate the facilities.
The plan is expected to create 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs and more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs, Trump said.
The US Commerce Department also plans to invest $955 million in technologies including silicon photonics, silicon germanium and advanced packaging.
Trump said that would bring total investments to $1.63 billion and put the value of the US government’s stake above $2 billion.
The projects aim to expand US chip production and support the country’s industrial and economic security; no construction timetable was given.
GlobalFoundries was selected to build and operate two semiconductor plants in Malta, New York, with up to $21 billion in financing from Japan.
The project is part of a US-Japan initiative to expand semiconductor production in the United States.
The initial investment is $10 billion, and the first plant is expected to begin operating in 2029.
The plants are expected to add 900,000 wafers to annual US production capacity.
The US Commerce Department will reallocate up to $955 million in CHIPS and Science Act incentives, while a separate deal would give the department about a 4% stake in GlobalFoundries.
