Pierre Coppey proposed to lead France's detention oversight body

The French president's office has proposed Pierre Coppey for a national oversight post as head of the body that monitors places where people are deprived of liberty.

The role covers settings such as prisons and psychiatric hospitals.

Coppey is a retired former president of Vinci Autoroutes and has chaired the Aurore reintegration association since 2020.

He is proposed to succeed Dominique Simonnot, whose term has ended after she was appointed in 2020.

The post drew around ten candidates.

Parliament's law committees must review the proposal in both the National Assembly and Senate before the government can formally appoint him.

The body oversees conditions in places where people are held, making its leadership relevant to the treatment and rights of detainees.
