Tesla begins production of Optimus robots in California
Tesla has begun making production-quality Optimus robots at its factory in Fremont, California.
The humanoid robot is a new product for the electric-car company, which has repurposed factory space to build it.
Elon Musk says Tesla aims to reach 20,000 robots a week by the end of 2027, though he expects the production ramp-up to take at least a year.
Musk also expects customer deliveries to begin by the end of 2027.
Before then, Tesla must improve the robot’s design so it can work safely and reliably for long periods, and solve manufacturing challenges such as building its hands.
The company plans to train robots on tasks at an Optimus Academy to gather data for improving their AI.
Tesla has not said when the robot will be widely available, and its practical abilities remain under development.
