Conductor Herbert Blomstedt dies at 99

Herbert Blomstedt, a leading conductor, has died at 99 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he was at home with his family.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus, which announced his death, said he died on Wednesday.

He led major orchestras in Europe and the United States, including the Dresden State Orchestra, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony.

He served as Gewandhaus music director from 1998 to 2005 and later remained connected to the orchestra as an honorary conductor.

Blomstedt continued conducting into old age, earning attention for fresh interpretations and performances with major orchestras.

His work helped shape musical life in Leipzig, and he received several honors, including Germany’s Grand Cross of Merit with Star in 2022.

His death marks the loss of a major figure in classical music, remembered by colleagues for his modesty as well as his musicianship.

I am a musician among musicians. I give something, and they give something back to me. This is a constant exchange not only of sounds, but also of thoughts. That is an enormous richness that we have as musicians.
