Freida Pinto welcomes more complex women in Indian films and TV
Freida Pinto says Indian films and television now show women with more complexity than when she made her screen debut in 2008.
She said women are no longer limited to roles that are only dutiful or morally strict, and that imperfect characters feel more relatable.
Pinto shared her views at the launch of the 2027 Pirelli Calendar, which features her alongside eight other Indian women.
The calendar puts India at the centre of the project for the first time and includes photographs by Solve Sundsbo, Raghu Rai and Avani Rai.
Pinto also hopes young people’s ideas lead to more creativity in India, without being suppressed.
Her next screen role is in Unaccustomed Earth, an eight-episode series based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s short-story collection; it will stream on Netflix from December 17.
