Bluetooth 7.0 upgrade will raise data speeds nearly fourfold
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has adopted Bluetooth High Data Throughput for Core 7.0, an upgrade to the wireless standard.
It raises the maximum data rate on Bluetooth Low Energy devices from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps, nearly four times the current rate.
Bluetooth connects many nearby devices, including phones, earbuds, watches and smart home products.
The higher speed could support better wireless audio and richer spatial experiences, as well as quicker transfers of fitness data and updates.
Bluetooth HDT may also help devices use power more efficiently, though the sources do not give specific battery-life figures.
The first compatible products are expected in early 2027, beginning with wireless audio devices.
The feature is optional in Bluetooth Core 7.0, and wider adoption may take time as manufacturers bring compatible products to market.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has adopted High Data Throughput as an optional feature of the Bluetooth Core 7.0 specification.
