iQIYI’s wuxia film Cup Snow draws praise after online release
Cup Snow: A Battle for Fame held a screening and discussion in Beijing on November 1, with the filmmakers and cast talking about how they made it.
The film is adapted from a long wuxia novel by writer Xiaoduan and is set in the Southern Song period.
It follows scholar Shen Fang, who is drawn into a struggle between imperial investigators and rebel forces after a violent incident.
Instead of centring on a legendary fighter, the story follows how Shen Fang uses strategy to find a way through the conflict.
The film has been streaming on iQIYI since October 16, and its score on Douban rose from 7.4 to 7.5.
It was also selected for a special screening section at the Pingyao International Film Festival.
The positive response adds to iQIYI’s efforts to explore new approaches to wuxia action films, and the platform says it will continue working with filmmakers on more films in the genre.
