Roma beat Genoa 2-0 to move provisionally second in Serie A

Roma beat Genoa 2-0 in the seventh round of Italy’s Serie A at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The teams were level at half-time after a tight first half that included a crossbar hit for each side.

Santiago Castro opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a deft finish from inside the penalty area.

Lulli added Roma’s second in the 68th minute after a move involving Matías Soulé.

The win came as Roma sought to respond to a Champions League defeat by Real Madrid, and it moved them provisionally into second place with 17 points, two behind leaders Inter.

Genoa, coached by former Roma player Daniele De Rossi, fell to a fifth defeat in seven league games and were listed second-bottom.

Roma’s position could change after Lazio, third on 16 points, play Juventus the following day.
