German pig farming group LFD Holding enters insolvency proceedings
LFD Holding has entered insolvency proceedings in Germany, after a court in Leipzig opened restructuring proceedings on 15 October.
The company is a holding group, not a farm operator; its separate farming subsidiary is not insolvent.
LFD was Germany’s largest pig breeder in 2020, when it said it had nearly 55,000 breeding sows, but the number of farms, animals and workers now affected is unknown.
Falling piglet prices have hurt the holding’s finances, while producers also face higher costs for feed, energy and wages.
Piglet prices have fallen to as low as €30, compared with €74 in mid-2025; the article says at least €65 is needed to cover costs.
The wider sector is also under pressure from increased production in Spain and declining meat consumption in Germany.
The subsidiary may continue operating or be sold, and the court-appointed supervisor says he currently sees no immediate threat to jobs or animal welfare.
LFD Holding GmbH entered insolvency proceedings opened by Leipzig District Court on 15 October.
The holding company manages business interests and does not itself produce pigs or piglets.
Its legally independent subsidiary, which carries out animal farming, is not insolvent.
The court-appointed administrator said falling piglet prices were the main cause of the holding company's financial difficulties.
He said the subsidiary's business could continue or be sold, and he currently sees no immediate threat to jobs or animal welfare there.
