Gold Gains as Stock Selloff Drives Investors Toward Safe-Haven Bonds

Gold rose as investors sought safer assets after a tech-led stock selloff unsettled markets on Thursday.

The move also pushed down US Treasury yields, helping gold recover nearly all of its losses from the previous session.

Gold traded above $4,150 an ounce, while silver and other precious metals also advanced.

The metal has fallen by more than a fifth since the US-Iran war began in late February, as energy disruption fueled inflation and tighter monetary policy.

Higher interest rates could weigh on gold because it does not pay interest, and recent US inflation data has raised expectations of a possible rate increase.

Investors are watching for Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s comments before a media blackout ahead of the central bank’s October 27-28 meeting.
