Delhi Police file FIR over Prashant Bhushan’s post of fake Lavrov video

Delhi Police have filed an FIR against lawyer Prashant Bhushan over a video he shared on social media.

The doctored clip appeared to show Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticising India’s internal affairs and its purchases of Russian oil.

India’s foreign ministry and the Russian Embassy said the video was fabricated.

Bhushan shared it with a caption describing the remarks as a “tight slap” for India and questioning advice given to Russia by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Jaishankar had met Lavrov at a G20 foreign ministers’ gathering in Atlanta, where they discussed Ukraine, the Gulf and other international issues.

The case was registered under Indian criminal law and the Information Technology Act, with police alleging the clip could spread rumours and disturb public order.

Police are investigating the video and how it spread online.
