Aurelio Marguerettaz elected president of Italy’s Aosta Valley
Aosta Valley’s regional council elected Aurelio Marguerettaz president on Thursday.
The 63-year-old member of the Union Valdôtaine takes over after a court ruled his predecessor ineligible for exceeding the regional limit on terms in office.
Marguerettaz is backed by the Union Valdôtaine, the Centre Autonomist group and Forza Italia, which joined the regional government without its former centre-right allies.
The change follows a week-long political crisis, and an opposition lawmaker noted that the region has had 10 presidents in 10 years.
Marguerettaz says his government will show how autonomy benefits residents, including through schools, healthcare, housing and support for businesses and young people.
He also wants cooperation with Italy’s national government in Rome and has invited parties from both the governing majority and opposition to work with him.
Opposition parties signalled they were open to talks, though the League said it would not give unconditional support.
