China Sets Up State-Owned National Data Group in Xiong’an

China established the state-owned National Data Group on October 20 in Xiong’an New Area, Hebei.

The company is tasked with developing and making better use of data resources, which China treats as a strategic resource for its economy.

Its investors include the State Council, Xiong’an’s administration and major telecom and power companies, which hold large stores of data and operate networks and energy systems.

The group aims to connect and improve access to valuable data, while lowering the cost of sharing and using it.

Xiong’an has built a digital infrastructure and is working with the group on areas including government services and digital identity.

The group is also expected to support public data use and artificial intelligence, where a shortage of high-quality data is a challenge.

Xiong’an and the group plan to explore data trading, security and computing, and develop examples in fields such as energy, healthcare and electricity.
