Moldova expels Russian diplomat after drone lands near homes

Moldova declared a Russian embassy employee persona non grata after a drone entered the country's airspace and fell nearby.

The drone came down in Kistelnita village, in central Moldova, about 100 metres from a home.

Moldovan officials said it was a Russian Geran drone that crossed into the country during a large Russian attack on Ukraine.

The drone fell near homes and an energy facility, according to President Maia Sandu.

Moldova said the airspace violation prompted the expulsion, a diplomatic measure requiring the employee to leave.

Russian drone incursions into Moldovan airspace have been reported during attacks on Ukraine, including one on Oct.

Moldova has also planned shelters at border crossings as it responds to the risks from incursions; the sources do not say when the embassy employee must leave.
