Fourth-tier Siarka Tarnobrzeg knocks Polish champions Lech Poznań out of cup

Fourth-tier Siarka Tarnobrzeg beat Lech Poznań 1-0 in the Polish Cup on Wednesday.

The victory sent Siarka, from the city of Tarnobrzeg, through to the last 16 and eliminated the reigning Polish league champions.

Arkadiusz Kasia scored the only goal in the second half, heading in from a corner.

Lech had recently drawn with Sunderland and beaten Legia Warsaw, but could not continue that run against a team from the fourth tier.

Siarka had already knocked out top-flight side Zagłębie Lubin in the previous round, making this their second surprise win over a higher-level team.

The cup run offers Siarka a chance to revive past ambitions, after the club spent three seasons in Poland's top division in the 1990s.

Siarka will continue in the competition in the last 16, though no opponent or match date is given.
