Brazilian student detained in California wins approval to leave US voluntarily

Brazilian actress and student Renata Alves Mietto has been detained in California for nearly two months after US immigration officers stopped her at Los Angeles airport.

She had lived in the United States since 2016, first attending high school and later studying at university.

A problem with her student visa emerged when she tried to transfer to a California university and was seeking to renew her visa.

Her mother says Renata was mistreated in detention, lost significant weight and avoids video calls because she does not want her mother to see her condition.

A US court approved her request to leave the country voluntarily, which means she can be released if she agrees to return to Brazil.

No date has been set for her departure, and her mother says Renata will have to leave college and start over in Brazil.

A Brazilian legal adviser to the consulate in Los Angeles says airport detentions are increasing and advises people with pending immigration cases to speak with a lawyer before flying.
