Renfe drafts new rail safety measures after Toledo collision
Renfe is preparing new railway safety measures after a collision in Toledo involving an AVE train and an Iryo train on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line.
The public rail operator is reviewing what its drivers should do when safety systems have problems.
One proposal would cap trains at 40 km/h during certain faults in the LZB system, which monitors train movements and sends safety information to drivers.
Renfe says the document is still being drafted and is not approved.
Renfe can change instructions for its own drivers, but Adif sets rules for train movements and manages the infrastructure, so the two organisations will need to coordinate.
Renfe has not said when the measures may be approved or take effect, or whether they would apply beyond the Madrid-Seville line.
Renfe is preparing a working document with measures to strengthen rail safety after a collision in Toledo between an AVE train and an Iryo train.
The measures are intended to improve drivers’ response to possible problems in safety systems.
One measure under consideration would limit trains to 40 kilometres per hour during certain LZB system incidents.
Renfe says the document has not been approved and is not final.
The company has not set a timetable for approval or for the measures to take effect.
