EU to support 46 new projects to reduce reliance on China for key metals

The projects aim to help Europe produce and recycle more rare earths and other strategic metals.

These materials are used in industries such as carmaking, renewable energy, technology and defence.

China controls much of the refining, and export restrictions last year raised concerns about supplies.

The EU says building up its own supply chains could make European industries less dependent on China.
