Italy’s draft road code would allow reversing at toll booths after equipment failures
Italy’s government has approved a draft road code that would allow reversing in a limited toll-booth situation.
The change concerns toll lanes on motorways and major roads, where reversing is currently prohibited.
Drivers could reverse only if a barrier or another toll device fails, so they can reach a working lane.
The general ban on reversing on motorways, ramps, exits and emergency lanes would remain.
A wrong turn into a lane reserved for electronic toll payment would not qualify for the exception.
Under the draft, reversing when it is not allowed could bring a €500 fine and the loss of 10 licence points.
The draft still needs further reviews and final approval, which is expected by 13 March 2027.
Italy’s draft road code would allow drivers to reverse at motorway toll booths if barriers or other devices fail.
The exception would let drivers back up to reach a functioning toll lane.
Reversing would remain prohibited on motorway carriageways, ramps, junctions and emergency lanes.
Reversing at a toll booth for other reasons, such as entering the wrong lane, would not be allowed.
The draft raises the fine for prohibited manoeuvres from €430 to €500 and retains a 10-point licence deduction.
