Russian man held in Poland on espionage charges after photographing rail sites

Polish police detained a 55-year-old Russian man in Świdnica after spotting him near a railway crossing while securing a football match.

They said he had photographed trains and railway infrastructure, and found thousands of images of key sites and transport facilities in Poland and elsewhere.

He has been charged with espionage, and a court ordered him held for three months.

Poland’s special services coordinator said Russia’s activity in Europe can involve reconnaissance, but said Russian intelligence has so far preferred local agents over sending Russian citizens to do this work.

The case raises concerns about the security of rail and transport sites, though the police said the photographs could have been used against state security rather than confirming how they were intended to be used.

If convicted, he faces at least five years in prison under Polish law.
