GPA reports third-quarter loss as sales fall
Brazilian retailer GPA reported a R$220 million loss for the third quarter of 2026, compared with a R$142 million profit a year earlier.
CEO Alexandre Santoro said last year’s result included an unusual credit; excluding it, he said the loss improved from R$360 million to R$240 million.
Same-store sales fell 1.5%, which Santoro attributed to weak conditions in food retail and supply problems.
GPA’s out-of-court debt recovery process, approved in October, disrupted some supplier relationships and left stores short of goods.
Operating earnings rose 17% as the company cut costs, improved margins and stopped some less profitable operations.
GPA plans to raise R$200 million and swap debt by December, while the recovery process’s benefits are expected to show up in later periods.
The company is also testing a new approach for its Extra brand in Rio de Janeiro and working to strengthen Pão de Açúcar in São Paulo.
GPA reported a third-quarter 2026 net loss of R$220 million, compared with a profit of R$142 million in the same quarter a year earlier.
CEO Alexandre Santoro said revenue fell 6.5%, while same-store sales declined 1.5%.
Santoro attributed the same-store sales drop to weak market conditions and supply disruptions linked to the company’s debt renegotiation process.
The company said it expects a R$200 million fundraising and a debt swap to take place by December.
GPA’s EBITDA grew 17% year over year, which the company attributed to operational efficiency, cost controls and improved commercial margins.
