USP community calls for live fact-checking at Globo presidential debate
USP communications faculty, students and alumni are calling for live fact-checking at Globo’s presidential debate on Friday, October 23.
The debate will feature Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, who have already faced each other in a debate hosted by Band.
The letter has more than 12,500 signatories and will be read publicly at the University of São Paulo on Wednesday evening.
Its signatories say debates can spread false claims, insults and hate speech when moderators only manage speaking time.
They propose a fact-checking arbiter alongside the moderator, with warnings and lost speaking time for candidates who repeat false claims.
They also want candidates warned and punished for statements or proposals they say violate human rights or constitutional protections.
Globo is the only broadcaster holding a debate before the second round, and the group wants these measures adopted permanently by TV and radio stations.
