Cattle slaughter in Puebla falls 5% amid screwworm alerts

Cattle slaughter in Puebla fell 5% this year, according to the state’s agricultural council chief.

In the city of Puebla, the federally inspected slaughterhouse processed 20,313 cattle, down from 21,428 over the period cited.

Screwworm-related health alerts and movement restrictions have disrupted cattle supplies, including animals brought from southern Mexico.

Puebla has only four federally inspected slaughterhouses across its 217 municipalities, and producers say the shortage forces some to transport cattle to other states for slaughter.

The lack of suitable facilities can reduce meat value by as much as 40%, while adding transport, slaughter and packaging costs.

Industry representatives want more certified slaughterhouses and stronger health controls to help protect livestock and reduce costs.

The council chief said the screwworm alert remains in place and called for an effective plan to control and eradicate the parasite.
