Brazil keeps electricity tariff flag green for November
Brazil’s electricity regulator, Aneel will keep the tariff flag green in November, so households will not pay an extra charge linked to the flag.
The flag reflects the cost and availability of electricity generation, and recent rain has helped stabilize hydroelectric reservoirs in the South and Southeast.
Before October, Brazil had five months of a yellow flag, which added R$1.885 for every 100 kilowatt-hours used.
A green flag does not guarantee lower electricity bills, because bills also depend on each distributor’s rates and how much power customers use.
El Niño remains a risk because it could change rainfall and raise temperatures, increasing pressure on power supplies and demand.
The sector says the start of the rainy season in early 2027 will be important for keeping energy prices lower through the year.
Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency kept the electricity tariff flag green for November.
Consumers will pay no additional charge under the flag system for a second consecutive month.
The agency said increased rainfall improved reservoir levels and reduced the need to use more costly thermal plants.
The green flag returned in October after five months of the yellow flag, which added R$1.885 per 100 kWh.
El Niño remains a concern because it could affect rainfall, temperatures and energy supply.
