Germany limits routine Covid vaccine coverage to older and at-risk groups
Germany’s public health insurance rules for Covid vaccines changed on 29 October 2026.
Healthy adults are now generally recommended to get a yearly booster from age 75, up from 60.
People aged 75 and older and certain risk groups remain eligible for coverage, including people with some chronic illnesses, care-home residents and some health workers.
Healthy adults under 75 generally do not have a routine entitlement to a yearly booster based on age alone.
The general recommendation for basic immunisation has also ended because most adults are considered to have enough protection against severe Covid.
People outside the recommended groups may have to pay, though their insurer can choose to cover extra vaccinations, so they should check first.
The updated recommendation from Germany’s Standing Committee on Vaccination was incorporated into the national vaccination rules.
Germany’s statutory health insurance no longer routinely covers annual Covid-19 booster vaccinations for every insured person.
From 29 October 2026, healthy adults are generally recommended to receive annual boosters only from age 75.
Coverage remains available for people at higher risk, including those with certain chronic conditions and residents of care homes.
The changes follow an updated recommendation from Germany’s Standing Committee on Vaccination, adopted by the Federal Joint Committee.
The general recommendation for adults to achieve basic immunisation through at least three vaccine or infection exposures has also been withdrawn.
