Spain’s Supreme Court applies amnesty to four Catalan leaders

Spain’s Supreme Court applied the amnesty law to four Catalan independence leaders: Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Raül Romeva and Dolors Bassa.

The four were among leaders of the Catalan independence movement who faced penalties linked to the Procés.

The decision lifts their political disqualification, allowing Junqueras to seek elected office again.

Junqueras and other independence politicians called the ruling a victory, while Spain’s and Catalonia’s governments welcomed it as a step towards political normalisation.

The amnesty has not yet been applied to Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín and Lluís Puig, whose cases are still pending.

The next step is whether the law will be applied to them, as well as to other people named in pending cases.
