Labour wins Holborn and St Pancras by-election, beating the Greens

Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali won the by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, a constituency in central London.

She received 12,292 votes, ahead of Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who received 8,928.

The seat became vacant after former prime minister Keir Starmer stepped down as a lawmaker.

The result is an early test for Andy Burnham, who became prime minister after Starmer was ousted in July.

Labour had lost support to the Greens, which made gains in London local elections in May, but Burnham's policy proposals have helped Labour appeal again to some left-leaning voters.

The Greens are also facing criticism over a party motion calling for a single Palestinian state across historic Palestine; Polanski did not vote on it and said he would remain leader.

Polanski said the party should focus on whether Labour's budget on October 28 delivers on its promises.
