Editorial urges South Korean towns to favor long-term investment over cash aid

A Dangjin City council approved a plan for one-off cash payments in South Korea, reversing an earlier rejection.

The city plans to set aside 530 billion won for 300,000-won payments to each resident, including foreign residents, before the Lunar New Year.

The payments are a key pledge by Mayor Kim Ki-jae, and the city aims to include the money in next year's budget.

The editorial says local governments have limited resources, with falling tax income, growing welfare costs and rising debt.

It argues that cash handouts can weaken local finances and may leave less money for other services or require borrowing.

It points to Sacheon, which put a planned payment on hold to focus spending on long-term growth, including the aerospace industry.

The editorial calls for investment in jobs, housing, health care, education and infrastructure, while saying Gunpo plans to vote in November on cutting its council budget.
