South Jakarta Neighborhood Uses Technology to Turn Food Waste Into Compost

Imam Basori, a neighborhood leader in Gandaria Utara, South Jakarta, uses technology to manage waste.

His Kompos Keliling program collects organic waste door to door with an electric cart fitted with a shredder, while workers show residents how to sort their waste.

The program processes 5 to 10 litres of organic waste a day.

A separate machine, called Komposter Mandiri, can handle up to 100 kilograms of organic waste and could serve a whole neighborhood unit.

The waste is turned into compost for local food security efforts, addressing residents’ concerns about smells and the unpleasantness of conventional processing.

Basori is among 15 participants in Jakarta’s Pilah Olah Sampah Heroes 2026 program, which recognizes people active in waste management.

Ten participants are due to advance to final judging on November 9, and the governor is scheduled to present the awards on November 10.
