Germany says it will support Ukraine until a responsible peace is reached
Germany plans to support Ukraine until a responsible peace is reached, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said.
The commitment could last for years and cost billions of euros.
Germany has spent or pledged about €100 billion for Ukraine and the effects of the war since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Of that total, about €41.7 billion went directly to Ukraine, while €35.9 billion was spent in Germany, mainly on Ukrainian refugees; another €22 billion is set aside for future military aid.
A 2025 change to Germany’s debt rules allows extra borrowing for defence and security, including support for Ukraine, rather than requiring cuts to other spending.
But borrowing means interest payments, and Germany also shares the costs of an EU loan of up to €90 billion for Ukraine.
The aid does not directly take money from schools or social benefits, but it adds costs to public budgets, and Wadephul’s stated policy is to continue it until peace is reached.

What people are saying
Certain spending is available only for the defence and security of Germany and Europe. We cannot simply spend that money on schools or roads in Germany.
Not one euro that flows to Ukraine is missing from social spending or education spending in our country.
Every borrowing leads to interest payments that burden the budget.
There is currently no more effective way to spend money on protecting Germany.
