Spain allows digital ID for voting on 29 November
Spain’s Central Electoral Board has approved digital ID for voting in the general election on 29 November.
The decision applies to the MiDNI app, which voters can use to prove their identity at polling stations.
The board had suspended digital ID use because it wanted a secure way to check that a digital document was genuine.
The Interior Ministry has now confirmed that polling stations will have devices with cameras and browsers to verify QR codes from the official MiDNI website.
Voters must generate a temporary QR code in the app and show it to polling station staff, who will scan it; this may take longer than showing a physical ID.
The decision will be sent to local electoral boards so they can inform more than 60,000 polling stations.
Digital driving licences remain suspended and cannot be used to identify voters.
