Bottas crash stops Mexican Grand Prix as barriers are repaired
Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily into the barriers at Turn 1 during the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City.
The Cadillac driver’s car appeared to suffer a front-left suspension failure under braking, leaving him unable to avoid the impact.
Bottas gave a thumbs-up, got out of the car and was taken to the track’s medical centre as a precaution.
Race control red-flagged the race to repair the barriers, stopping it with the drivers near the end of the race.
Before the stoppage, Max Verstappen led Charles Leclerc, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli also in contention.
The FIA said the race would restart after a 35-minute delay, with the order reset to the end of a completed lap.
If the positions remain as they were before the interruption, Antonelli will become Formula 1’s youngest world champion.
