Wegovy weight-loss pill launches in French pharmacies
Wegovy is now available as a pill in France from Nov.
2, after previously being offered there as an injection.
The prescription medicine is for adults with obesity or excess weight who have at least one related health condition.
It is the first oral GLP-1 obesity medicine sold in France; GLP-1 drugs act like a gut hormone that helps regulate appetite and can support weight loss.
The pill will cost €169 to €235 a month depending on the dose, and France’s public health insurance will not cover it at launch.
In a clinical study used to support its approval, people taking the highest dose lost an average of nearly 17% of their weight after about 15 months.
Novo says the pill adds an option rather than replacing the injection, while US rival Eli Lilly is preparing to bring its own oral obesity drug to Europe after a positive assessment from the European Medicines Agency.
Wegovy weight-loss tablets are due to become available in French pharmacies on 2 November.
