False violence warnings spread fear across northern Italy

After unrest in Milan over the weekend, unverified warnings spread through student chats across northern Italy about attacks, sexual violence and planned disturbances.

The messages named cities including Cremona, Piacenza, Verona, Ravenna and Pavia, but the predicted attacks did not happen on Tuesday.

Police said the warnings appeared unfounded, and investigators are trying to establish who started some of the messages.

Some students stayed home, families kept children out of school, and police increased patrols around schools and transport hubs.

In Cremona, a false alert about a violent march left streets quiet and shops taking precautions; two teenagers were reported for allegedly spreading the alert.

The warnings caused fear and disrupted ordinary routines, even without any violence.

Police investigations into the messages are continuing, and further precautions may be taken where new concerns arise.
