Former Espanyol striker Michel Pineda dies at 62

Former striker Michel Pineda has died aged 62, Espanyol said on Thursday.

He played for the Barcelona-based club from 1984 to 1990, making 233 appearances and scoring 73 goals.

Pineda helped Espanyol reach the 1988 UEFA Cup final, where the team lost to Bayer Leverkusen on penalties after giving up a three-goal first-leg lead.

He later played for Racing Santander, and in 1993 scored the only goal in a promotion playoff against Espanyol.

That goal sent Racing up and Espanyol down to Spain's second division.

Pineda did not celebrate, and he remained closely connected to Espanyol.

The club has announced his death; no further arrangements or next steps were stated.
