Brazilian government given up to 240 days to decide Angra 3’s future
Brazil’s audit court ordered the government to decide Angra 3’s future within 120 days after reviewing the required documents.
The review itself can take up to 120 days, so the full process could take up to 240 days.
Angra 3 is a nuclear power plant in Brazil whose construction began in 1981 and is now stalled.
The court said delays by the National Energy Policy Council led to R$2.5 billion in costs between 2024 and mid-2026 to maintain the site and pay project debts.
Completing the plant would require R$23 billion, while operator Eletronuclear reported a R$142 million loss in 2025.
The energy ministry must coordinate the decision with the plant operator and several government agencies, including the development bank BNDES.
Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts ordered the government to decide Angra 3’s future within up to 240 days.
The first 120 days are for reviewing the documents needed to assess whether construction should continue, followed by up to 120 days for the decision.
The court said indecision by the National Energy Policy Council had led to R$2.5 billion in expenses between 2024 and mid-2026.
Angra 3’s completion would require R$23 billion, and its operator, Eletronuclear, reported a loss of R$142 million in 2025.
The Mines and Energy Ministry must coordinate the decision with several government bodies and energy-sector institutions.
