Small group drove much of online WNBA trans debate, data analysis says

A data group called GUDEA analyzed 188,631 posts about transgender athletes in the WNBA over 24 days, from July 20 to August 12.

It found that almost 99 percent of the posts appeared on X, formerly Twitter.

GUDEA classified 3.57 percent of the users it sampled as high-reach or unusually frequent posters, including influencers, pundits and aggregation accounts.

That small group produced 16.75 percent of the posts identified in the analysis.

GUDEA's founder said the debate was amplified by a handful of posts and that some of the most inauthentic engagement surrounded content designed to provoke strong reactions.

The discussion has grown after public comments about eligibility, protests at games and a task force meeting by WNBA team leaders.

The league did not change its eligibility rules after that meeting, and the debate is continuing during the playoffs.
