Labour prosecutors sue Rio lawmaker over call to dismiss Lula voters
Rio de Janeiro labour prosecutors have sued state lawmaker Índia Armelau over a social media post about employees who supported President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Armelau urged business owners to check employees’ social media for signs they had supported Lula and said employers should not keep people who hate business owners.
The prosecutors say the message encourages political harassment and discrimination in the workplace.
They are asking a labour court to order her to stop urging employers to discriminate against, dismiss or target workers for their political views.
They also want her to publish a statement within 24 hours of a court decision saying employees are free to choose their candidates.
The case seeks a R$100,000 fine for non-compliance and R$500,000 in collective damages.
Armelau said she was not calling for mass dismissals and backed a campaign against hiring people who hate business owners.
Labour prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro filed a civil action after state lawmaker Índia Armelau suggested employers dismiss voters of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The MPT says her message encourages electoral harassment and discrimination based on political belief.
Prosecutors asked the Labour Court to order Armelau to stop encouraging employers to discriminate against, dismiss or persecute people.
They also sought a public notice affirming employees’ freedom to choose candidates, and requested penalties if the order is not followed.
