Sejong mayor seeks national funding for cancer treatment and AI projects
Sejong Mayor Cho Sang-ho is seeking national funding for major city projects as lawmakers review next year's government budget.
He plans to meet lawmakers in South Korea's National Assembly on October 27 and 28.
His main requests are a proton cancer treatment center and an AI government ecosystem in Sejong.
The proposed center would develop and test cancer treatments using proton technology, and the city says central South Korea lacks advanced cancer treatment facilities.
Sejong also wants to use its concentration of government and research institutions to lead AI-based improvements to public administration.
The funding requests are not yet approved; the city is asking lawmakers to include them during budget review, along with support for other projects.
Sejong plans to respond quickly as budget talks continue to try to secure funding for the coming year.
