Italy cuts diesel excise duty by about 4.9 cents per litre until November 7
Italy has cut diesel excise duty by about 4.9 cents per litre including VAT until November 7.
The reduction applies to diesel fuel and is set by a decree published in Italy’s Official Gazette.
The government will use 38.7 million euros from higher VAT receipts to cover the measure, with those receipts increased by rising international oil prices.
The National Consumer Union says the saving is too small and too brief for drivers.
Legacoop says about 180 million euros would be needed to keep fuel costs down through the end of the year, including during the busy Christmas period for freight transport.
Its estimate is 60 million euros a month, and it also calls for lasting measures, especially in southern Italy.
The sources do not say whether the government will extend the cut or provide further support.
Italy has cut diesel excise duty by about 4.9 cents per litre, including VAT, until November 7.
A decree sets the duty at €632.90 per 1,000 litres.
The measure is funded with €38.7 million from higher VAT revenue collected between September 1 and 30.
The decree says VAT revenue rose because international oil prices increased.
The National Consumers Union called the cut too small and too brief, while Legacoop said nearly €180 million would be needed to keep fuel costs lower through the end of the year.
