Swiss data show many hunting violations but few animal cruelty convictions
In Switzerland, hunting violations and animal cruelty cases are recorded under different laws.
Graubünden recorded more than 1,000 hunting fines and reports each year from 2012 to 2020, mostly for shooting the wrong animal.
A review of nationwide animal welfare decisions found 17 convictions related to hunting from 2018 to 2022, and three more cases were closed without a conviction.
Eight convictions involved hunters who failed to search promptly for wounded animals, while six involved shooting an animal after misidentifying it.
The figures cannot be compared directly because many hunting-rule violations are not animal cruelty cases.
The review also found only one hunting-related case in Graubünden’s animal welfare database for 2018 to 2020, when the canton recorded 3,459 hunting fines and reports.
A calculation applying Graubünden’s rate to all Swiss hunters would suggest about 6,500 violations a year, but this is not an estimate of actual nationwide cases because hunting rules and enforcement differ.
Graubünden recorded more than 1,000 hunting fines and reports against recreational hunters each year from 2012 to 2020, averaging nearly 1,200.
A review of Swiss animal welfare decisions from 2018 to 2022 found 17 hunting-related convictions and three cases in which proceedings were discontinued.
The article says most Graubünden cases involved incorrect kills, which are generally handled under hunting law rather than treated as animal cruelty.
A calculation applying Graubünden’s rate to Switzerland’s roughly 30,000 hunters suggests about 6,500 incidents a year, but the article stresses this is not an estimate of actual violations.
