Brazilian listed companies lose R$734 billion in market value in one day

Brazilian listed companies lost R$734 billion in market value on Monday after the presidential election.

Their combined value fell 12.91%, from R$5.684 trillion on Friday to R$4.950 trillion.

The loss was almost equal to Petrobras's market value, at 98.4% of the state-controlled company's value.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won with 51.79% of valid votes, beating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who received 48.21%.

Some investors had positioned themselves for a Bolsonaro victory, and the result was followed by sharp falls in Brazilian shares; the Ibovespa index dropped more than 17% at one point, triggering a temporary trading halt.

The one-day fall erased gains built up in earlier weeks and left listed companies worth R$325 billion less than before the first election round.

Even so, their combined market value remained above its level at the end of 2025, and no further market developments are specified.
