Auschwitz survivor Hermann Höllenreiner dies at 92
Hermann “Mano” Höllenreiner, an Auschwitz survivor, has died at 92 in Mettenheim, Bavaria.
He was born into a Sinti family in Munich and was deported by the Nazis when he was nine.
He survived Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen, and escaped during a death march in January 1945.
After liberation, a French foster family cared for him until he was reunited with his family in Munich in 1946.
He spoke publicly about his experiences only later in life, sharing what he had endured as a child in Nazi camps.
His testimony also drew attention to the genocide of Sinti and Roma and continuing discrimination against them in Europe.
His testimony helped keep Sinti and Roma suffering in public memory; he received Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit in 2013.
