Turkey to showcase earthquake recovery and recycled-debris pavilion at COP31
Turkey’s Environment Minister Murat Kurum says the country will present its earthquake rebuilding and resilient-cities work at COP31.
The effort follows the February 2023 earthquakes centred near Kahramanmaraş, which affected 11 cities.
In Antalya’s COP31 Green Zone, a 140-square-metre pavilion shaped like a phoenix was built using material from earthquake rubble collected in Hatay.
About 33 of its 54 tonnes of material, or 60%, came from the rubble, and its concrete parts were printed in seven days.
The project is meant to show how construction waste can be reused in new buildings.
Turkey also plans to share its work rebuilding climate-resilient homes in the 11 affected cities, while a hub at the site will bring together projects on climate adaptation, disaster preparedness and sustainable urban planning.
At COP31, the pavilion and recovery work will be presented to an international audience.
