Beef prices rise in São Paulo as cattle costs top R$400

Cattle prices have passed R$400 per arroba in some parts of São Paulo, where supplies are tight and demand is strong.

The state’s average daily price is about R$390 per arroba, according to Cepea, a research center.

Beef prices for consumers in São Paulo rose 2.3% over four weeks and are up 9% so far this year, according to Fipe.

The higher cost of beef makes chicken more competitive, but Newcastle disease cases in Santa Catarina have led some countries to restrict Brazilian chicken imports.

If more importers limit purchases to affected areas, more chicken could remain available in Brazil and compete further with beef.

Brazil’s beef exports also fell 34% in October compared with the same period in 2025, amid restrictions from China and the European Union, while average export prices rose 14%.

The effect of chicken import restrictions on local supply depends on how importing countries respond.
