Unpublished love letters to Clarice Lispector to be published in November

A new book will publish unpublished love letters that diplomat Maury Gurgel Valente wrote to Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector.

The book, titled *Cartas de amor infinito*, is due out from publisher Rocco in November and tells the story of their relationship through their correspondence.

They met at law school and married in 1943, the year Lispector published her first novel, *Near to the Wild Heart*.

They had two sons and lived in several countries because of Valente’s diplomatic career.

The couple separated in 1959 after Lispector struggled with life as a diplomat’s wife and missed Brazil; she returned to Rio de Janeiro with their children.

They remained on cordial terms, and Valente continued to express his love for her after the separation.

The book’s release comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of Lispector’s death in 2027.
