India’s rabies death figures vary widely, exposing gaps in surveillance
India has no complete national count of rabies deaths, making it hard to measure the disease as the country aims to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.
A community-based study estimated 5,726 people die of rabies each year, using survey, laboratory and modelling data.
Government surveillance recorded 54 deaths in 2024, while a separate system recorded 271 medically certified rabies deaths in 2023.
These figures use different methods, and the medically certified system covered about 22% of registered deaths in 2023.
The gap matters because incomplete figures make the rabies burden difficult to track and can hinder efforts to prevent deaths.
The study also found gaps in care after bites: about one in five dog-bite victims had not received anti-rabies vaccine, and many did not complete the course.
The National Centre for Disease Control says States have been asked to make rabies notifiable, while vaccination of dogs and timely treatment for people are also needed.
India has no single comprehensive national measure of annual human rabies deaths, despite its goal of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.
A community-based study estimated that 5,726 people die of rabies in India each year, while government systems reported far fewer deaths.
The Health Ministry’s surveillance system reported 54 rabies deaths in 2024, less than 1% of the study’s estimated annual toll.
The Registrar General’s system recorded 66 medically certified rabies deaths in 2022 and 271 in 2023, but covers only medically certified deaths.
The differing figures reflect gaps in surveillance and are not directly comparable because the systems use different methods.
- Who
- People in India who die of human rabies; the figures come from government systems and a research study.
- What
- National rabies death figures vary widely, exposing gaps in mortality surveillance.
- When
- Government figures cited cover 2022 to 2025; the study estimates annual deaths.
- Where
- India.
- Why
- The systems use different methods and neither provides a complete national count; some deaths occur outside the formal health system.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The IDSP-IHIP system reported 21 rabies deaths, while the MCCD system recorded 66 medically certified rabies deaths.
The IDSP-IHIP system reported 50 rabies deaths, while the MCCD system recorded 271 medically certified rabies deaths.
The IDSP-IHIP system reported 54 rabies deaths.
The government table recorded one rabies death for the month but gave no figure for all of 2025.
- Estimated annual deaths
- 5,726, according to a community-based study
- IDSP-IHIP deaths
- 21 in 2022; 50 in 2023; 54 in 2024
- MCCD deaths
- 66 in 2022; 271 in 2023
- MCCD coverage
- 22.3% of registered deaths in 2022; 22.0% in 2023
- Study survey
- 337,808 people in 78,807 households across 60 districts in 15 States
- Elimination goal
- Dog-mediated human rabies by 2030
What people are saying
The two figures, however, are generated through different methods and should not be treated as directly equivalent. The figures therefore highlight a large gap between reported surveillance deaths and estimated mortality
Lack of consolidated data is a challenge in rabies eradication. Very often cases and deaths occur in areas of the country where they are not measurable. Vaccination of stray dogs, stringent post-exposure vaccination for humans, and disruption of the rabies chain is essential to curb the problem
