India orders voter roll revision in 17 states and territories
India’s Election Commission has ordered a special voter roll revision in 17 states and territories.
The exercise will run from November 2 to December 28, with the final rolls due on January 4, 2027.
It will let first-time and newly eligible voters apply to register, while people can also request corrections or object to someone’s inclusion.
The revision comes after a gap since the previous one, whose final roll was published in January 2025.
It differs from the controversial special intensive revision because it does not recheck every existing voter; only new applications are verified.
It may also give people removed in the intensive review a way to rejoin the rolls, after 130 million names were deleted nationwide.
The Commission will share machine-readable draft and final rolls with political parties, and the process includes states due to hold assembly elections early next year.

It is intended to update voter lists and help newly eligible voters register, as well as people removed during the special intensive revision.
The exercise is the first such revision since 2024, apart from one completed in Assam ahead of polls earlier this year.
The 17 regions include five states due to hold assembly elections early next year.
