Two hikers rescued after becoming stranded overnight in Japan's Yatsugatake range

An 80-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were rescued near Mount Nyū in Japan’s Yatsugatake range, in Nagano Prefecture.

They had set out on November 2 intending to finish their hike in one day, but became unable to continue after dark.

The pair spent the night on a trail at about 2,150 metres, after fatigue slowed their progress, according to police.

A passing hiker found them the next morning and called for help.

The woman’s condition had worsened, with suspected hypothermia, while the man was conscious and complained of dizziness.

Rescuers carried them out; the woman was flown to a hospital and the man was taken by ambulance.

Both were taken to hospitals in Saku, but no further information about their condition was given.
